Prebiotics and Probiotics - what is the difference?

Special guest, Keira Rumble of Krumbled Foods takes us through the difference between Prebiotics and Probiotics and why they are an important inclusion in your diet.

-------

Both Prebiotics + Probiotics are essential for general health & wellbeing.

Your body is home to trillions of bacteria, that help (or hinder) your body function.

When your body is filled with good bacteria, your skin will glow, you will have an abundance of energy, you will feel clear, and your immune system will be at its best.

When your body is filled with not so good bacteria, you will see things like weight gain, sugar cravings, yeast infections, a low immune system, energy slumps, breakouts and so on.

Everyone hears about probiotics but what about prebiotics? What is the difference?

Prebiotics are non-digestible plant fibres found in fruits, vegetables, legumes and grains. As they pass through the small intestines undigested, they arrive at the large intestine where they ferment.

As the prebiotics ferment, they essentially act as a ‘fertilizer’ for your good bacteria (probiotics) to feed on and grow. Prebiotics help to create a healthy environment that stabilises both your skin and gut microbiome by feeding the probiotics present in your gut.

Healthy gut flora can improve your mood, the way your skin looks and feel and overall health.

Did you know that there are more than 600 different types of probiotics in our body? And 10 times the amount of cells?

Probiotics are the live, good bacteria that live in your gut. Probiotics are beneficial for both digestive and skin health. They assist in extracting nutrients from food and can improve bowel function, inflammation and the function of the intestinal mucosal barrier, helping to prevent unwanted organisms from entering the bloodstream.

Probiotics also help to produce vitamins essential to maintaining the health of our skin, including Vitamin K, B12 and biotin. These live, healthy bacteria are found in a variety of different types of food, pills and supplements.

Supplementing with a probiotic can help to restore imbalances and can be a great preventative health measure. They are also an asset to your skin because they help to create a healthy environment and stabilise both your skin and its microbiome which is directly linked to gut health.

Krumbled Foods Beauty Bites have both prebiotics and probiotics!

The Beauty Bites use a natural, dietary, pre-biotic fibre otherwise known in the scientific world as Isomalto-Oligosaccharides which is made from tapioca sourced from the cassava root. When consumed regularly, it helps to support good digestive health while also working as a pre-biotic that helps you live a healthier lifestyle.

Simply put, it’s a big word with bigger health benefits. Prebiotics improve digestion, strengthen your immune system and improve mineral + vitamins absorption.

The Beauty Bites use the Bacillus Coagulans strain which is a science-backed probiotic strain that has been shown to provide digestive health, immune support and help protein (collagen) utilisation. It is also a spore probiotic, and therefore survives the whole journey from the manufacturing process, to the shelf, right through to the intestinal tract.

In some cases, other products use different strains of probiotics that ultimately die during production, on the supermarket shelf, or they ultimately die in the stomach’s acid before ever reaching the intestine.
