Sensitised skin versus sensitive skin. Know your skin type!

Sensitised skin versus sensitive skin. Know your skin type!

Here to help us better understand our skin concerns is Biologi - the leader in Clean Cosmeceuticals.

Hands up how many of you believe you experience sensitive skin? That tell-tale tingle when you apply a new product, or the redness you experience when you deviate from your usual brand of makeup. Well, that might not be sensitive skin.

Let’s dig a little deeper.

What is sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin is a skin type. It can be caused by genetics, a medical condition or an autoimmune condition. Sensitive skin can lead to chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis or vitiligo.

Unfortunately, there’s no cure for sensitive skin. The best you can do is to treat the symptoms and reduce the impact on daily life.

What is sensitised skin?

Sensitised skin is caused by an impaired barrier function that leaves the nerve endings exposed. When these nerves come into contact with toxins, bacteria or even extreme weather conditions, the result can be any of the following:

  • Dryness
  • Stinging
  • Itchy
  • Redness
  • Tightness
  • Bumpy
  • Easily irritated

The cause and impact of sensitised skin are different from person to person and can be dependent on specific lifestyle factors such as the following:

  • A reaction to skincare products including sunscreen
  • Chemicals and pollution exposure
  • Stress
  • Exposure to wind or extremely hot or cold weather
  • Lack of sleep

How to treat sensitive skin

As we mentioned, sensitive skin is impossible to ‘cure’.

We recommend receiving a personalised skincare plan or specific medical advice for any form of sensitive skin. It’s important to note that if sensitive skin is caused by an underlying skin condition, treatment may only relieve symptoms rather than cure them.

How to treat sensitised skin

The good news is, it’s completely possible to cure sensitised skin using a two-pronged approach. The first and most important step is to heal the broken barrier. Once you’ve done this, you can then go on to protect and nourish cells to keep skin healthy in future.

Instead of turning to products aimed at curing sensitive skin, follows these simple steps:

Avoid touching your face

Even the cleanest of hands contains millions of bacteria that can irritate the skin.

- Hydrate

Hydrated cells are healthy cells. Consuming liquid such as water, herbal teas and smoothies promote the skin’s natural hydrating process to strengthen cells and improve function.

- Avoid synthetic ingredients in skincare

Sensitised skin is more likely to react to synthetic ingredients and inflame delicate skin cells.

- Avoid fragrance

Fragrance is one of the most common allergens and can lead to the signs of sensitised skin including redness, stinging, breakouts and dryness.

- Exfoliate

Give harsh scrubs a miss, however, and look for products that contain fruit acids and can gently clear clogged pores rather than abrasive scrubs that can cause more damage.

- Use Bf Restore Face & Body Serum

Biologi Bf Restore Face & Body Serum is an extract of Australian finger lime. As a natural source of tryptophan, ferulic acid and vitamin C, the powerful phytonutrients work to repair the damaged barrier function while reducing inflammation and redness to reduce the symptoms of sensitisation.

Sensitised and sensitive skin can be painful and uncomfortable skin conditions. While sensitive skin involves looking at the causes of the condition before deciding on a treatment protocol, sensitised skin can be cured by repairing the damaged barrier function with fully active plant nutrients.
