#behindthebiz | Bridget Rose from PearlBar

Activated charcoal is one of nature’s most powerful cleaning agents!

We use it to improve our skin, to help with digestive issues and to otherwise detox the body, so when we discovered PearlBar's Konjac Facial Sponge, we were excited to try it out.

This light weight sponge harnesses all of the benefits of charcoal such as detoxifying and absorption of impurities, along with many benefits which konjac brings to the table including highly mineralising and deep cleansing.

So we just had to sit down with founder Bridget Rose to talk skincare, wellness and to learn a little more about the benefits of this amazing facial sponge.

Tell us a bit about the people behind your company?

PearlBar is run by its original founder with the help of a skilled set of contractors on a per project basis.

What inspired you to start your company and when did you start it?

With a background in Beauty Therapy and Cosmetic Teeth Whitening, I began PearlBar Oral Care + Beauty at the fresh age of 23 out of my spare room in Melbourne, Australia. With the intention in mind to change to our daily health and beauty practices to more planet and body friendly alternatives, I began with my first product, PearlBar’s Bamboo + Charcoal Toothbrush!

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

I am so motivated by the impact and values PearlBar stands for like being planet-loving, toxic-free and offering real whitening and cleaning effects to our customers, naturally! I am always so motivated by the positive responses we get from our customers and this really inspires me to find even craftier ways to harness nature's amazing benefits and bring them to people in sustainable products.

What is your favourite product in your range?

A mother never has a favourite ;)

What is your favourite way to enjoy PearlBar products?

I love how travel-friendly PearlBar is, so whenever I’m travelling, I love bring the range along. Actually, there’s a Natural Whitening Toothpaste Mini in my handbag at all times!

What is an interesting way of using your products that not many people would know about?

PearlBar’s KonJac Sponge doesn’t need any cleanser, so this product makes it the perfect travel companion!

What have been the biggest trials so far in starting and running your company?

Having started PearlBar as a passion project with little to no formal business operations experience, learning how to wear many different hats all in 1 day has been - enlightening!

What experiences lead to the values you have instilled in your company?

Around the same time I began PearlBar, I became vegan and was paying very close attention to the impacts my daily routines (like oral and beauty care). 5 years later I am proud to of carried that mindfulness into all of PearlBar’s operations from production to the way we ship our products! Environmental and animal-friendliness is priority #1!

If you weren’t running your company, what would you be doing?

That’s a sad thought. I dare say I’d be a very lost little lamb!

What is your favourite way of winding down and taking time out?

I live for personal development. Anyone who knows me hates to love my ability to slip in a Brene Brown or Tony Robbins quote into a conversation that never really called for any such reference. Wine also is a go-to for me. Combine those 2 things and you can consider me unwound!

Here at Retreat Yourself, we LOVE dreaming BIG - what is your vision for your company?

I would love to see PearlBar stocked in large everyday retailers alongside the biggest players such as Colgate, Nivea etc. so people all over the world are exposed to better health and beauty choices for themselves and our planet against toxic and otherwise harmful products on the market.

People should not have to go out of their way for these options, big retailers need to get onboard with the movement and help their customers by offering them to a wide range of brands, not just the ones who have been around forever and have harmful effects on them no less!

For anyone out there wanting to start their own business, what would your biggest piece of advice be?

Find your values and passions and be consistent in building your service or product range with these passions and values in mind. Big sales and brand exposure feels good for a minute, but the feeling of putting out something of real substance with positive intent is where real and sustainable motivation comes from (which is so key in running a business) and truly makes for a long lasting and successful brand.

And lastly, what does a fulfilled life look like to you?

Across the board I care about positive intent - in PearlBar, my relationships and how I spend my time. If the majority of where I’m putting my energy doesn’t contain positive intent or align with my personal and professional values, I don’t consider that a fulfilled day.
